I’ve received probably a multitude of warnings about dangerous foods during pregnancy. While it is true that some foods constitute a potential risk to the baby, the vast majority is safe and the risk of developing a complication in pregnancy related to nutrition is much reduced.

P1. What Foods Should I Avoid During Pregnancy?

The main concern during pregnancy is the seafood, but you don’t have to banish completely – just some types of seafood are problematic. The raw seafood, such as sushi or oysters, can house bacteria that can harm the baby. In addition, some fish contain methyl mercury, a metal believed to be harmful to the developing brain of the fetus and young children, when ingested in high doses. Consequently, the Food and Drug Administration recommends pregnant women who do not eat more than 170 grams (approximately a dose) per week of white tuna and tuna steak or 350 grams (about two ounces) per week of canned blue fin tuna or other fish cooked.

However, some experts consider this limit too high and recommend that weekly consumption of tuna bound to a maximum of 100 to 170 grams – regardless of the type of tuna. The FDA also recommends that avoid shark, swordfish, Sierra completely real and fish-camel palette, as these fish are higher up on the food chain and contain higher levels of mercury. Other foods with so be careful are the unpasteurized milk or soft cheeses, Pate, raw or undercooked meat, sausages and cold meats and dishes with raw eggs (Caesar salad sauce, hollandaise sauce, uncooked dough for biscuits), since they may contain harmful bacteria.

Alcohol is the main danger during pregnancy, since travel quickly from your blood flow to the baby and the effects of even just one drink per day can be devastating.There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, so it’s best to avoid it altogether. The other drinks to avoid are the high and unpasteurized milk and eggnog. There is a slight risk that these beverages contain e. coli and other bacteria that can harm you and the baby. Although it may have heard that caffeine is another great banned substance during pregnancy, it’s not actually dangerous, since swallowed in moderation.

After years of controversy, most researchers believe these days that, despite the caffeine crosses the placenta, moderate amounts (less than 300 milligrams per day)not harm the baby, what will match two or three cups of 150 milliliters per day.

P3. How Can I Protect Myself From Food Poisoning?

Thoroughly Wash all fruits and vegetables.

Cook all meat until well done (should not be pink).

Wash your hands often when you prepare meals and take care to clean any surface that has been in contact with meat or raw eggs before using it again.

Do not leave leftovers out of the fridge for more than 2 hours and store them inshallow boxes, to make them quickly.

Adjust the refrigerator temperature between 1° C and 4° C and the freezer to a temperature of zero or below, in order to prevent the deterioration of chilled foods.
