When it comes to the world of tablets, the dominance of Apple’s iPad is undeniable. Since it was launched, the device has become a kind of starting point for any competitor trying to steal market leadership – if it does not have at least the same features, hardly any other device can get attention.
From that, it impresses Microsoft’s insistence on trying to carry the same desktop experience to a portable environment. Although Windows 7 is a great evolution from previous versions of the operating system(especially the horrible Vista), it is not exactly the best option when it comes to portable devices.
In this article we list the main reasons why producing a tablet based on any version of Windows 7 is simply not a good idea. Comparisons with the iPad will be inevitable, since you can not ignore the market leader and everything the device did properly. Little touchscreen support
One of the great attractions for those who prefer to invest in a tablet in place of a notebook or netbook is greater portability. That is, forget accessories like mouse and keyboard – the tablets business is really a big screen and completely compatible with touch navigation, and you will get more from embudoexpress.
And that’s just where the problem with Windows 7 is. Because the operating system was designed primarily for desktop users, the entire product was developed to be used through the mouse and keyboard combination.
Okay, through Windows Touch it is possible to navigate the computer through gestures in the same way as a smartphone. However, the way the operating system organizes its windows is simply not made for the touch.
Take the example of the ribbon interface of the Office family, which includes commands such as word counting and formatting controls. With the mouse, this is perfectly accessible, but think how hard it will be to do it with your fingertip – especially on the small screen of a tablet, at most 10 inches.
As well as iOS has demonstrated, touch-based operating systems need to have well-organized menus with easy-to-access commands due to the lack of precision offered by finger navigation. Filling the screen of options very close to the other only generates headache and frustration for the user.
Situation that is reflected in the programs
One of the great attractions of a Windows 7 based tablet is undoubtedly compatibility with a large number of programs. Text editors, games, music players – just think of a category to come to mind several famous names fully adapted to the operating system.
But what good is it to run your favorite game if the interface is not compatible with ringtones? So that experience that is amazing on the desktop can become disappointing on a tablet.
The lack of an organized marketplace like the present on Android and iOS means that the experience available will be exactly the same as a desktop. Of course, adding to it a little optimized touchscreen interface. The result is not the most pleasant, especially on small screens.
Variable and unpredictable hardware
One of the great plays of Windows and that accounts for much of the popularity of the operating system is the compatibility with a virtually endless amount of combinations of parts.
Great for the desktop environment where investing in upgrades is a simple task and does not require buying a brand new machine to run news. When talking about tablets, all this variation of hardware is not exactly good news.
Restrictions on iOS and Android, for example, limit the number of compatible hardware, but in return deliver a more optimized use experience. Windows 7 will have to deal with various combinations of processors, display aspects of screens, controls, among other factors – the result is a system with more room for failure and does not provide the same experience for all users.
Add that to the requirements needed to run the operating system on a machine with tablet price restrictions and the recipe for failure is done. Not surprisingly, if products that, despite having the minimum requirements for Windows 7, appear on the market, would be much more efficient with XP installed. You do not have to go very far to see this situation occur, just see the notebooks marketed by some companies.
Battery and boot time
Whoever owns an iPad knows that one of the most attractive features of the device is the long life of the battery. The 10 hours of continuous use available mean you do not have to recharge the device for a long time, making it a great choice for accessing emails or fast posting on Twitter when you’re away from a power source.
Already with Windows 7, the story is quite different. Intel’s Atom processors, widely used on mobile devices and which may be the option of Microsoft, use the battery at a much faster pace than the Apple device.

Another problem is related once again to the fact that the operating system was made for desktops. In addition to not being programmed for equipment that is always on, the operating system boot process is a slow task – even on machines with first-line hardware, you have to wait about a minute for that to happen.
These combined factors make it much harder to get the experience you expect from a tablet: an easy-to-reach portable device with a durable battery that allows you to quickly access any application with a minimum wait time.
It is a Microsoft system
Regardless of preference for a particular operating system, the fact is that despite the qualities, the Microsoft system requires a lot of maintenance from the users.
In a portable environment, it would be strange to have to install and run anti-virus software constantly. And do not think you’d get rid of it: because Windows 7 is one of the top hackers around the world, an unprotected tablet would not be long until it gets infected by some malicious software after a few hours of browsing.

This is not to mention the various applications that any constant user of the operating system has become accustomed to. Defragmenters, performance optimizers, cleaning software, audio and video codec packages, among others. The list is huge, and extends according to the use for which the machine is intended.
In addition, a fairly common situation would recur on any computer with Microsoft software installed. After about a year of use, the tablet would begin to lose performance due to various changes to the operating system registry.
The result of all this is a situation that never crossed the minds of iPad owners: format the device. A simple process on a desktop, but that does not seem very easy to accomplish on a tablet.
Windows Phone 7
The last reason Windows 7 does not seem like a good tablet option is that Microsoft has a much more compelling alternative. Just like iOS and Android, the transition from Windows Phone 7 to tablets seems inevitable and much more competent than using the desktop operating system.

So it’s no surprise if Microsoft announces a change of plans and decides to focus its portable efforts on a product different from the current one. The impression is that the company is only launching tablets based on Windows 7, while waiting for the right time to announce a tablet fully compatible with Windows Phone 7. After this happens, products based on the desktop system should be completely forgotten.
