Overview of Hamilton County, Indiana

Hamilton County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 182,740. The county’s county seat is Noblesville, Indiana.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,043 km² (403 mi²). 1,031 km² (398 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 182,740 people, 65,933 households, and 50,834 families residing in the county. The population density is 177/km² (459/mi²). There are 69,478 housing units at an average density of 67/km² (175/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.38% White, 1.54% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 2.44% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 65,933 households out of which 43.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.50% are married couples living together, 7.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.90% are non-families. 18.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.80% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 34.90% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 7.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $71,026, and the median income for a family is $80,239. Males have a median income of $56,638 versus $34,807 for females. The per capita income for the county is $33,109. 2.90% of the population and 2.00% of families are below the poverty line.
