Overview of Henry County, Indiana
Henry County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 48,508. The county’s county seat is New Castle, Indiana. Henry County is regarded as the main inspiration for the setting of the novel Raintree County by Ross Lockridge, Jr..
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,023 km² (395 mi²). 1,018 km² (393 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 48,508 people, 19,486 households, and 13,971 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 20,592 housing units at an average density of 20/km² (52/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.96% White, 0.86% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 19,486 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.91.
