Jay County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 21,806. The county’s county seat is Portland, Indiana.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 994 km² (384 mi²). 994 km² (384 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 21,806 people, 8,405 households, and 6,017 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (57/mi²). There are 9,074 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.64% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,405 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older.
