Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 31,705. The county’s county seat is Madison, Indiana.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 940 km² (363 mi²). 936 km² (361 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 31,705 people, 12,148 households, and 8,430 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (88/mi²). There are 13,386 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.19% White, 1.45% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,148 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
