Overview of Putnam County, Indiana
Putnam County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 36,019. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. The county’s county seat is Greencastle, Indiana.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,250 km² (483 mi²). 1,244 km² (480 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.47% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 36,019 people, 12,374 households, and 9,119 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (75/mi²). There are 13,505 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.87% White, 2.93% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,374 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.40% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
