Overview of St. Joseph County, Indiana

St. Joseph County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 265,559. The county’s county seat is South Bend, Indiana.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,194 km² (461 mi²). 1,185 km² (457 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 265,559 people, 100,743 households, and 66,792 families residing in the county. The population density is 224/km² (581/mi²). There are 107,013 housing units at an average density of 90/km² (234/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.36% White, 11.46% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.48% from other races, and 1.97% from two or more races. 4.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 100,743 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 11.80% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,420, and the median income for a family is $49,653. Males have a median income of $37,076 versus $25,310 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,756. 10.40% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
