Overview of Starke County, Indiana
Starke County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 23,556. The county’s county seat is Knox, Indiana.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 809 km² (312 mi²). 801 km² (309 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.96% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 23,556 people, 8,740 households, and 6,450 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (76/mi²). There are 10,201 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.52% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,740 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.40% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.10.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.
