Overview of Dickinson County, Iowa

Dickinson County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 16,424. Its county seat is Spirit Lake, Iowa. The county was organized in 1857 and is named in honor of Daniel S. Dickinson, a U.S. Senator for New York.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,046 km² (404 mi²). 987 km² (381 mi²) of it is land and 59 km² (23 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.61% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 98.90% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,103 households out of which 26.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 6.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.78.
