Webster County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 40,235. Its county seat is Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,860 km² (718 mi²). 1,852 km² (715 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 40,235 people, 15,878 households, and 10,304 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 16,969 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.39% White, 3.39% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 2.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,878 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.10% are non-families. 30.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 11.10% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
