Bourbon County (standard abbreviation: BB) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 15,379. The largest city and county seat is Fort Scott.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,655 km² (639 mi²). 1,650 km² (637 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 94.06% White, 3.08% Black or African American, 0.84% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,161 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.01.
