Ellsworth County (standard abbreviation: EW) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 6,525. The county is named after Ellsworth, Kansas, the county seat. Extremely rural, Ellsworth County has a lower population in the 2000 census than it had in 1900 (6,525 vs. 9,626).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,874 km² (723 mi²). 1,854 km² (716 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.04% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 93.67% White, 3.56% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 3.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,481 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 6.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.90% are non-families. 31.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 20.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
