Cumberland County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 7,147. Its county seat is Burkesville, Kentucky.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 805 km² (311 mi²). 792 km² (306 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.61% water. Major waterways include the Cumberland River and a small branch of Dale Hollow Lake which covers the southern end of the county.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,147 people, 2,976 households, and 2,038 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (23/mi²). There are 3,567 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.28% White, 3.41% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,976 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $21,572, and the median income for a family is $28,701. Males have a median income of $21,313 versus $16,548 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,643. 23.80% of the population and 16.40% of families are below the poverty line.
