Nelson County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 37,477. Its county seat is Bardstown.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,098 km² (424 mi²). 1,095 km² (423 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 37,477 people, 13,953 households, and 10,269 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (89/mi²). There are 14,934 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.84% White, 5.51% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,953 households out of which 38.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 12.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 22.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.08.
