Lafayette Parish is a parish located in the state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Lafayette and as of 2000, the population is 190,503.
Geography
The parish has a total area of 700 km2 (270 mi2). 699 km2 (270 mi2) of it is land and 1 km2 (0 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics
Home to a number of Cajun peoples, as of the census of 2000, there are 190,503 people, 72,372 households, and 48,851 families residing in the parish. The population density is 273/km2 (706/mi2). There are 78,122 housing units at an average density of 112/km2 (290/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 73.36% White, 23.80% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 72,372 households out of which 36.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.20% are married couples living together, 14.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.50% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.12.
In the parish the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 11.70% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 9.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
