The lagoons, isolated by coastal ropes, were arranged to constitute a major waterway between the Gulf of Mexico and the continent: the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway; this, whose lowest points are below sea level, skirts the coast from Texas to Florida and plays an important economic role. Mississippi natural surveys protect populations, roads and cultures. The increased river bed, important containment work (3 220 km of surveys) was carried out to protect the plain against the floods of the Mississippi.

Louisiana is a state in the southern United States on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The largest city is New Orleans and the most famous river is the Mississippi, which flows into the sea here. Louisiana’s heraldic bird is the pelican, hence the nickname Pelican State.

Swamps and Coast – Wildlife and wide beaches

The weather in Louisiana is characterized by a subtropical climate and storms. The area is repeatedly hit by hurricanes. One major disaster was caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Large parts of Louisiana were destroyed, and New Orleans was also badly affected.

Louisiana’s capital is not New Orleans but Baton Rouge to the north. The city is much smaller than New Orleans, but is still Louisiana’s second largest city.

Louisiana’s history – upheavals and changes

The first Europeans in the region were the Spaniards. Hernando de Soto explored the region for the crown. France occupied and claimed the area, naming the colony Louisiana after their King Louis XIV.

In the Louisiana Purchase, the United States acquired the area and thus expanded significantly. During the civil war the state belonged to the southern states. Many plantation owners were positive about slavery and fought for the preservation of the old order.

Louisiana produced many famous people. Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans in 1901. The city is considered the cradle of jazz. Other celebrities include Reese Witherspoon and sisters Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears.
