Overview of Baraga County, Michigan

Baraga County is a county located in the state of Michigan, named after Bishop Frederic Baraga. As of 2000, the population is 8,746. Its county seat is L’Anse. The L’Anse Indian Reservation of the Ojibwa is located within the county.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,768 km² (1,069 mi²). 2,341 km² (904 mi²) of it is land and 427 km² (165 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.42% water. The county is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Lake Superior, at the southeast base of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The villages of Baraga and L’Anse are located at the base of the Keweenaw Bay. Point Abbaye projects from the county, creating the Huron Bay. Mount Arvon is the highest point in Michigan at 1979 feet.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,746 people, 3,353 households, and 2,223 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 4,631 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.61% White, 4.99% Black or African American, 12.04% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 3.82% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,353 households out of which 29.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.50% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 29.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 16.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 111.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,673, and the median income for a family is $42,500. Males have a median income of $32,138 versus $22,030 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,860. 11.10% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.50% of those under the age of 18 and 10.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
