Monroe County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 145,945. Its county seat is Monroe.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,761 km² (680 mi²). 1,427 km² (551 mi²) of it is land and 334 km² (129 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.96% water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 145,945 people, 53,772 households, and 39,952 families residing in the county. The population density is 102/km² (265/mi²). There are 56,471 housing units at an average density of 40/km² (102/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.42% White, 1.90% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 2.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 53,772 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.00% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.14.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $51,743, and the median income for a family is $59,659. Males have a median income of $46,715 versus $27,421 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,458. 7.00% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.10% of those under the age of 18 and 8.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
