Overview of Ontonagon County, Michigan
Ontonagon County is a county of the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 7,818. Its county seat is Ontonagon.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 9,690 km² (3,741 mi²). 3,397 km² (1,312 mi²) of it is land and 6,293 km² (2,430 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 64.95% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 7,818 people, 3,456 households, and 2,225 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 5,404 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.25% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,456 households out of which 23.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 31.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.75.
In the county the population is spread out with 20.20% under the age of 18, 4.70% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 30.20% from 45 to 64, and 21.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 102.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $29,552, and the median income for a family is $36,690. Males have a median income of $31,884 versus $21,121 for females.
