Leflore County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 37,947. Its county seat is Greenwood.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,570 km² (606 mi²). 1,533 km² (592 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.38% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 37,947 people, 12,956 households, and 8,887 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (64/mi²). There are 14,097 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 30.00% White, 67.73% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,956 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.00% are married couples living together, 27.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.33.
