Overview of Madison County, Mississippi

Madison County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 74,674. Its county seat is Canton.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,922 km² (742 mi²). 1,857 km² (717 mi²) of it is land and 64 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.35% water. The southestern border of the county is defined by the old course of the Pearl River before it was dammed to create the 33,000 acre (134 km²) Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 74,674 people, 27,219 households, and 19,325 families residing in the county. The population density is 40/km² (104/mi²). There are 28,781 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.29% White, 37.48% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,219 households out of which 37.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.90% are married couples living together, 15.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 32.40% from 25 to 44, 20.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 90.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,970, and the median income for a family is $58,172. Males have a median income of $41,460 versus $29,170 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,469. 14.00% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.30% of those under the age of 18 and 13.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
