Quitman County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 10,117. Its county seat is Marks.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,053 km² (406 mi²). 1,049 km² (405 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,117 people, 3,565 households, and 2,506 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 3,923 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 30.47% White, 68.62% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,565 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.60% are married couples living together, 26.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.42.
