Overview of Washington County, Mississippi

Washington County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 62,977. It is named in honor of the first President of the United States, George Washington. Its county seat is Greenville.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,972 km² (761 mi²). 1,875 km² (724 mi²) of it is land and 97 km² (37 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.90% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 62,977 people, 22,158 households, and 15,931 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (87/mi²). There are 24,381 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 33.97% White, 64.57% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,158 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.60% are married couples living together, 26.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.35.

In the county the population is spread out with 31.50% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 20.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 87.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,757, and the median income for a family is $30,324. Males have a median income of $28,266 versus $20,223 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,430. 29.20% of the population and 24.90% of families are below the poverty line.
