Barton County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 12,541. Its county seat is Lamar.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,546 km² (597 mi²). 1,539 km² (594 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,541 people, 4,895 households, and 3,441 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 5,409 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.93% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,895 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.
