Butler County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 40,867. Its county seat is Poplar Bluff.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,810 km² (699 mi²). 1,807 km² (698 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 40,867 people, 16,718 households, and 11,318 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (59/mi²). There are 18,707 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.16% White, 5.22% Black or African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,718 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.10 males.
