Carter County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 5,941. Its county seat is Van Buren.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,318 km² (509 mi²). 1,315 km² (508 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,941 people, 2,378 households, and 1,674 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.60% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 1.35% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.03% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
