Howard County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 10,212. Its county seat is Fayette.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,219 km² (471 mi²). 1,206 km² (466 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,212 people, 3,836 households, and 2,631 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (22/mi²). There are 4,346 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.13% White, 6.84% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,836 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.98.
