Lafayette County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 32,960. Its county seat is Lexington.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,655 km² (639 mi²). 1,630 km² (629 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.49% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 32,960 people, 12,569 households, and 9,099 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (52/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.52% White, 2.27% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,569 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.01.
