Overview of Perry County, Missouri
Perry County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 18,132. Its county seat is Perryville.
The county was organized on November 16, 1820 (effective January 1, 1821) from Ste. Genevieve County and named for Oliver H. Perry, naval hero of the War of 1812.
Perry County is governed by a three member county commission. Two commissioners are elected from each of two approximately equal districts that divide the county. The third commissioner, called the presiding commissioner, is elected from the county at-large. Each of the commissioners is elected for a term of four years.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,254 km² (484 mi²). 1,229 km² (475 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.98% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,132 people, 6,904 households, and 4,957 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 7,815 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.21% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,904 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.50% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $36,632, and the median income for a family is $43,240. Males have a median income of $28,337 versus $19,720 for females.
