Ray County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 23,354. Its county seat is Richmond.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,486 km² (574 mi²). 1,475 km² (569 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 23,354 people, 8,743 households, and 6,539 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 9,371 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.50% White, 1.46% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,743 households out of which 35.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.10% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.20% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.07.
