Overview of Holt County, Nebraska

Holt County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 11,551. Its county seat is O’Neill.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,262 km² (2,418 mi²). 6,249 km² (2,413 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Holt County was named after Joseph Holt of Kentucky, who was Postmaster General and Secretary of War in the cabinet of President Buchanan. The county was created by an act of the Legislature in 1862.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,551 people, 4,608 households, and 3,170 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 5,281 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.86% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,608 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 5.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.30% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 19.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,738, and the median income for a family is $37,463. Males have a median income of $24,681 versus $17,593 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,256. 13.00% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.00% of those under the age of 18 and 12.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
