Seward County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 16,496. Its county seat is Seward.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,491 km² (576 mi²). 1,489 km² (575 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 16,496 people, 6,013 households, and 4,215 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 6,428 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.05% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,013 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.50% are married couples living together, 5.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 14.30% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.50 males.
