Overview of Belknap County, New Hampshire

Belknap County is one of nine counties in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. It is located in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, slightly southeast the state’s geographic center. The county seat is Laconia. As of 2000, the county’s population is 56,325.

History

Belknap County was organized in 1840 by removing parts of northeastern Merrimack County and northwestern Strafford County. It is named for Dr. Jeremy Belknap, a renowned preacher, historian, and author of The History of New Hampshire. The first County Court was held within the town of Meredith, at a village known as Merideth Bridge on the Winnipesaukee River. In 1855, the town of Laconia was separated from Merideth.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,214 km² (469 mi²). 1,039 km² (401 mi²) of it is land and 174 km² (67 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.35% water. Most of that is comprised by Lake Winnipesaukee.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 56,325 people, 22,459 households, and 15,496 families residing in the county. The population density is 54/km² (140/mi²). There are 32,121 housing units at an average density of 31/km² (80/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.61% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,459 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 3% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,605, and the median income for a family is $50,510. Males have a median income of $34,741 versus $25,445 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,758. 6.10% of the population and 4.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.60% of those under the age of 18 and 4.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
