Overview of Strafford County, New Hampshire

Strafford County is a county located in the state of New Hampshire. As of 2000, the population is 112,233. Its county seat is Dover.

Strafford County was one of the five original counties identified for New Hampshire in 1769. It was named for William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford in the mistaken belief that he was the ancestor of governor John Wentworth. Although they were distantly related, William had no descendents. The county was organized at Dover in 1771. In 1840 the original size of the county was reduced with the creation of Belknap County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 994 km² (384 mi²). 955 km² (369 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.95% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 112,233 people, 42,581 households, and 27,762 families residing in the county. The population density is 118/km² (304/mi²). There are 45,539 housing units at an average density of 48/km² (124/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.29% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 42,581 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.10% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 13.60% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,803, and the median income for a family is $53,075. Males have a median income of $36,661 versus $26,208 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,479. 9.20% of the population and 5.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.10% of those under the age of 18 and 6.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
