Overview of Hunterdon County, New Jersey

Hunterdon County is a county located in the state of New Jersey. As of 2000, the population is 121,989. Its county seat is Flemington.

General

Hunterdon County sits on the western edge of New Jersey and has become a rural/suburban strong hold for many families working New York and Philadelpia. It’s most notable historical fact is that the county seat was home to the “Trial of the 20th Century” in which the murderer of infamous pilot Charles Lindbergh’s (who was first to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean) son was put on trial and convicted of his killing. Home to growing towns and shopping areas as well as relaxing rurals areas, Hunterdon County is a far stretch for the urban areas often associated with New Jersey.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,134 km² (438 mi²). 1,114 km² (430 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

Much of the county is hilly, the ground rising up slowly from the Delaware. The highest points are two areas in Lebanon Township, one on the Morris County line, both reaching at least 1,060 feet (323 m) above sea level. The lowest elevation is where the Mercer County line reaches the Delaware River, approximately 40 feet 12 m) above sea level.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 121,989 people, 43,678 households, and 32,845 families residing in the county. The population density is 110/km² (284/mi²). There are 45,032 housing units at an average density of 40/km² (105/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.91% White, 2.25% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.92% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 2.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 43,678 households out of which 37.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.30% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 20.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 31.30% from 25 to 44, 27.10% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $79,888, and the median income for a family is $91,050. Males have a median income of $61,888 versus $40,852 for females. The per capita income for the county is $36,370. 2.60% of the population and 1.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.10% of those under the age of 18 and 4.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
