Chaves County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 61,382. Its county seat is Roswell.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 15,734 km² (6,075 mi²). 15,723 km² (6,071 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 61,382 people, 22,561 households, and 16,085 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 25,647 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.95% White, 1.97% Black or African American, 1.13% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 21.25% from other races, and 3.12% from two or more races. 43.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 22,561 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.70% are married couples living together, 13.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.17.
