Overview of Dickey County, North Dakota

Dickey County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 5,757. Its county seat is Ellendale.

The legislature for the Dakota Territory authorized the formation of Dickey County in 1881, naming it for one of their members, George H. Dickey. An organizing meeting was held on August 28, 1882 at Ellendale.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,957 km² (1,142 mi²). 2,929 km² (1,131 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,757 people, 2,283 households, and 1,499 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 2,656 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.78% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.56% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,283 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 4.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.30% are non-families. 32.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 22.50% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 21.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
