Steele County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 2,258. Its county seat is Finley.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,853 km² (715 mi²). 1,845 km² (712 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,258 people, 923 households, and 635 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 1,231 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.32% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 923 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 4.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.01.
