From Indian territory to the mother of presidents
The first Europeans to control this area were the French. They developed an extensive trade network between settlers and the indigenous people of the region. After the war with the British, France had to surrender the area to England.
After the independence of the United States, Ohio was a much larger area that included several other states.
What is now Ohio was the first to officially outlaw slavery. In the mid-19th century, the area waged war with the state of Michigan over the city of Toledo. The war is still known today as the Toledo War.
Because so many former US presidents are from Ohio, the state has been nicknamed the Mother of Presidents.

Ohio is a flat area, criss-crossed by rivers and lakes. Ohio borders Lake Eire in the north. The Ohio River, which defines the south of the state, shapes a large area. Small and large rivers run through the south.
The many rivers form an idyllic landscape, which is recognized by several national and state parks.
