Jackson County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 28,439. Its county seat is Altus.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,083 km² (804 mi²). 2,079 km² (803 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 28,439 people, 10,590 households, and 7,667 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (35/mi²). There are 12,377 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.14% White, 8.03% Black or African American, 1.74% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 9.34% from other races, and 3.42% from two or more races. 15.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,590 households out of which 38.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county, the population is spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 19.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
