Overview of Cameron County, Pennsylvania

Cameron County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 5,974.

Cameron County was created on March 29, 1860 from parts of Clinton, Elk, McKean, and Potter Counties and named for Senator Simon Cameron. Its county seat is Emporium.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,032 km² (399 mi²). 1,029 km² (397 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,974 people, 2,465 households, and 1,624 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 4,592 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.83% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,465 households out of which 27.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.40% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.10% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.60 males.
