Overview of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania

Cumberland County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 213,674.

Cumberland County was created on January 27, 1750 and named for Cumberland, England. Its county seat is Carlisle.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,427 km² (551 mi²). 1,425 km² (550 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 213,674 people, 83,015 households, and 56,118 families residing in the county. The population density is 150/km² (388/mi²). There are 86,951 housing units at an average density of 61/km² (158/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.40% White, 2.36% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.67% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 83,015 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.00% under the age of 18, 10.60% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.
