Huntingdon County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 45,586.

Huntingdon County was created on September 20, 1787 from part of Bedford County.

Its county seat is Huntingdon.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,303 km² (889 mi²). 2,264 km² (874 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 45,586 people, 16,759 households, and 11,798 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (52/mi²). There are 21,058 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.33% White, 5.14% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,759 households out of which 30.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.70% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 109.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.20 males.
