Overview of York County, Pennsylvania

York County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 381,751.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,358 km² (910 mi²). 2,343 km² (904 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 381,751 people, 148,219 households, and 105,531 families residing in the county. The population density is 163/km² (422/mi²). There are 156,720 housing units at an average density of 67/km² (173/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.76% White, 3.69% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.39% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 2.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 148,219 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.
