Overview of Aiken County, South Carolina

Aiken County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 142,552. Its county seat is Aiken.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,798 km² (1,080 mi²). 2,778 km² (1,073 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 142,552 people, 55,587 households, and 39,411 families residing in the county. The population density is 51/km² (133/mi²). There are 61,987 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.37% White, 25.56% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.83% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 2.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 55,587 households out of which 33.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.30% are married couples living together, 13.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,889, and the median income for a family is $45,769. Males have a median income of $36,743 versus $23,810 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,772. 13.80% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.90% of those under the age of 18 and 12.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
