Hampton County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 21,386. Its county seat is Hampton.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,457 km² (563 mi²). 1,450 km² (560 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 21,386 people, 7,444 households, and 5,315 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 8,582 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 42.89% White, 55.67% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 2.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,444 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.90% are married couples living together, 18.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.60% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 103.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.90 males.
