McCormick County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 9,958. Its county seat is McCormick.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,020 km² (394 mi²). 931 km² (360 mi²) of it is land and 89 km² (34 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.71% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 9,958 people, 3,558 households, and 2,604 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 4,459 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 44.78% White, 53.88% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,558 households out of which 24.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 17.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.82.
