Overview of Sumter County, South Carolina

Sumter County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 104,646. Its county seat is Sumter.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,766 km² (682 mi²). 1,723 km² (665 mi²) of it is land and 43 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.44% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 104,646 people, 37,728 households, and 27,616 families residing in the county. The population density is 61/km² (157/mi²). There are 41,751 housing units at an average density of 24/km² (63/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 50.13% White, 46.68% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 37,728 households out of which 36.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.20% are married couples living together, 18.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,278, and the median income for a family is $38,970. Males have a median income of $28,083 versus $21,162 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,657. 16.20% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.60% of those under the age of 18 and 17.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
