Butte County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 9,094. Its county seat is Belle Fourche.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,870 km² (2,266 mi²). 5,824 km² (2,249 mi²) of it is land and 46 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.79% water.

The county is divided into two townships: Union and Vale; and two areas of unorganized territory: East Butte and West Butte.

The racial makeup of the county is 95.52% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 1.65% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 2.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,516 households out of which 35.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county, the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.20 males.
